Although we had to make a long drive to get to Gettysburg, it was well worth it.

We got to see a lot of interesting history, including how much of a pivotal point it was for the Union Army in the Civil War. There were 157,289 men engaged in Gettysburg, and 51,112 casualties, over 3 days! We did the auto tour driving around most of the battlefield. Although we did not do a live tour, I still enjoyed the whole entire trip. The cannons were super cool, although I was bummed that they didn't tell you which cannons were real and which ones were replicas. My favorite part of Gettysburg was little round top, shown below:

.

It was a large hill that was fought over for many hours by the Union and Confederate Armies, the Union Army coming out on top. The location of this hill was above the Wheatfield, a very large battle that took over 4,000 lives. The Wheatfield changed hands roughly 6 times over a few hours. The high perch was important in protecting the Union's left flank, which Confederate General Longstreet was responsible for attacking.

The cannon in the photo above is facing towards the unions front. It would have been used during Pickett's Charge, the last Confederate charge at Gettysburg. Although the union was defending, they where in a much better position than the Confederates were. The Confederates needed to carve across a meadow, devoid of any cover. The Union was just able to rain bullets on them, easily protecting their forward position and driving the Confederates back. Two days later, the Confederates retreated.

It was nice not having to walk that much and just being able to ride in our RV learning about Gettysburg. We were able to just cruise all around Gettysburg using the audio tour. In the end of the tour, I had learned a lot and enjoyed the whole entire trip!
